Factors influencing the salary

The salary of an account manager in Switzerland is largely shaped by professional experience and education: those holding a degree from a university of applied sciences or a university earn more on average than people with only a vocational apprenticeship. The number of years spent in sales or customer service also plays an important role, since experienced account managers look after larger and more complex client portfolios. The place of work has a noticeable effect as well: in cantons such as Bern, Graubünden and Geneva salaries lie above the national average, while in Ticino and Lucerne they tend to be lower. The industry matters too, as companies selling products or services that require explanation often pay experienced account managers more than businesses with simpler sales processes.

Job profile & responsibilities

Account managers look after and develop a company's customer relationships. They are the first point of contact for existing clients, identify their needs and work out suitable solutions from their employer's range of products or services. Their duties include preparing and conducting client meetings, drawing up offers, negotiating terms and maintaining the business relationship over the long term, with the aim of increasing both revenue and customer satisfaction. Account managers work closely with the sales, marketing and product departments and keep a constant eye on market and industry developments in order to identify new sales opportunities. In Switzerland they are active in virtually every sector, from industry and services through to IT and telecommunications. Entry into the profession is usually via a commercial apprenticeship or a business administration degree, often combined with experience in sales or customer service.
